Showdown is a good classroom strategy to use when you have posed a question to the whole class and you want the whole class to be involved in generating an answer.
Here is how it works:
- In groups of 4, learners write their own answer to your question.
- They ‘showdown’ and share their answers in with the group.
- As a group they decide who has the best answer to share with the class.
- Each group shares their answer to the whole class.
This is a good strategy to use with EAL learners because they get to share their understanding in more of a non threatening environment before whole class feedback. In addition, they can clarify any misunderstandings that they might have on the topic. They also get to hear other answers to the question thus developing their subject knowledge.
