It gets noisy in a big classroom but Word Tennis can be a great classroom strategy to review vocabulary learnt over a unit of work. Here is how it works:
- Students form pairs.
- Student A starts and they must think of a word beginning with ‘A’ or you could choose a different letter!
- Student B must then hit back with a word beginning with the next letter of the alphabet.
- The aim of the game it to keep the rally going for as long as possible.l
The game could be adapted to be played in small groups or even for the whole class!
For EAL learners that are at the beginner / early stages of language acquisition the game could be adapted so that instead of thinking of a word beginning with the next letter of the alphabet, they just think of words related to the unit of work they have been learning.
Quick, simple to prepare, fun and competitive, Word Tennis can help our EAL learners to remember keywords they have been learning about.
